Lawsuit claims hospital mistakes led to woman dying of blood clot

Kentucky residents may have heard of a case where a Pennsylvania hospital was named in a lawsuit after the death of a newly graduated medical doctor from a blood clot in her brain. The legal action charges the medical facility with hospital malpractice after it allegedly committed a series of errors that were compounded due to negligence and a staffing shortfall. The young Pennsylvania woman died a little more than two weeks after receiving her medical degree from The Commonwealth Medical College in Scranton.

The 26-year-old came to the medical facility complaining of severe headaches that had lasted for more than 10 days despite taking over-the-counter pain medications. The lawsuit alleged that doctors and staff failed to take the woman’s medical history properly or do imaging of her head. As a result, the suit claimed, the blood clot in her brain got worse over the 40 hours following her arrival at the emergency room.

The lawsuit further alleged that due to that delay, her condition went from easily correctable to life-threatening. One of the problems contributing to the hospital malpractice, the legal action maintains, was inadequate staffing due to the woman coming to the facility during the Memorial Day weekend. The plaintiffs said that this failure in staff levels put off for days what should have been done immediately and thus led to the woman’s death.

Hospital errors such as the one alleged in this case can lead to wrongful death. The loved ones of patients who they believe have died due to a physician mistake, medication error, or emergency room error may seek compensation for their losses in court. Medical expenses and funeral costs are among the damages that may be redressed.

If you or someone you love has experienced a serious personal injury or wrongful death due to negligent hospital errors, you have the right to obtain compensation through a Kentucky or Ohio Ohio medical malpractice claim.
