5 tips for driving your motorcycle in the rain

Most local motorcyclists wait all year long in Kentucky for warm weather to arrive. This provides the opportunity to ride without any concerns about cold weather and snow getting in the way.

Even though the summer months are sure to bring warmer temperatures, you could find yourself on your motorcycle when the rain begins to fall.

Here are five tips for driving your motorcycle in wet conditions:

  • Wear the right gear: Protecting yourself from the elements will improve your comfort and safety. For example, wear a high-quality waterproof rain suit to keep the water off your body. Also, look into the types of boots and gloves that are best for wet conditions.
  • Slow down: When riding in wet conditions, you must slow down. The faster you’re driving, the greater chance there is of losing control of your bike. Also, use less of a lean angle and make throttle adjustments to maintain traction.
  • Watch for other drivers: Just as the rain impacts your ability to drive safely, it does the same to others. For example, keep a close eye on other vehicles when approaching an intersection, as a driver could run a red light or stop sign.
  • Watch for road hazards: This can include everything from leaves to sealed pavement to wet gravel. Any hazard has the potential to cause an accident.
  • Follow a dry line: Forget about driving in the area of the lane that’s wet. Instead, seek out a dry line made by other vehicles on the road. Dry pavement improves traction and enhances maneuverability.

Even if you follow these safety tips, you could still suffer injuries in a motorcycle accident. For instance, a trucker may not be paying attention on the highway, thus causing them to change lanes into you at a high speed.

If you’re injured in an accident, immediately move to safety and call 911. The sooner you can receive medical treatment, the better off you’ll be.

After you receive treatment and your health is stabilized, contact your insurance company and collect information pertaining to the accident. These steps put you in position to seek compensation for your injuries and other damages.
