3 facts about uterine ruptures expecting parents should know

Uterine ruptures are emergency situations that put a woman’s life, and the life of her unborn child, in danger. There are signs of uterine rupture that your doctor should recognize right away. Other symptoms are those you can recognize at home, which signal that the mother needs immediate medical care.

1. There are signs of uterine ruptures that require emergency care

There are many signs of uterine ruptures. Extreme abdominal pain, a high, rapid pulse, signs of shock, vaginal bleeding or referred pain in the chest all are signs of a uterine rupture and internal bleeding. The first sign of a rupture during labor is the baby having an abnormal heart rate. Those who have a risk of a uterine rupture should have a monitor that continuously tracks the baby’s heartrate prior to and during delivery.

2. C-sections predispose a woman to a rupture

If the mother has previously had a C-section, it’s possible that the uterine wall could rupture during a vaginal delivery. Those who have had only one low-transverse incision may go through with a vaginal birth with a low chance of having a uterine rupture. However, those who have a classical C-section, or C-sections with a vertical incision, have a high risk of uterine rupture during a vaginal delivery. They should be scheduled for a C-section prior to labor. If a woman has previously had a uterine rupture, then she should automatically have a C-section.

3. Your baby can be saved in many cases

In many cases involving a uterine rupture, delivery has already started. A surgeon who believes a rupture is taking place should immediately perform an emergency C-section to save the child. Then, the mother needs surgery to control the bleeding. Bleeding is usually extensive, so it’s not uncommon for a woman to need a transfusion. Women also receive IV antibiotics to prevent infection after a rupture. Women who have controllable bleeding may be able to keep their uterus, while others may need a hysterectomy immediately.

If your surgeon or nurses don’t recognize this severe complication of labor, the mother or child could die. It’s important that the mother and child receive quick care. If your loved one dies or suffers severe injuries because of delays, your Cincinnati birth injuries attorney at The Lawrence Firm, PSC can help you get the compensation you deserve.
