A two-hour drive northeast of Covington lands you in Dublin, Ohio. The Columbus suburb is home to a family that recently settled a lawsuit in which they alleged medical malpractice caused the wrongful death of a family member. A 38-year-old Dublin man was not properly diagnosed at the university’s Dublin medical center, the family and man’s estate alleged in the suit.
After being treated at the center for severe rectal pain, he called the office the next day and several times over the new few days to tell the doctor of his bleeding and severe pain, according to the lawsuit. He was advised to make adjustments to his pain medications. He died five days after his initial clinic visit of a cerebral hemorrhage due to an undiagnosed blood condition.
The plaintiffs argued that the care provided by the doctor and medical center were below standard. No blood tests were ever ordered for the man who succumbed to thrombocytopenia. The condition is one in which there’s “a low blood platelet count,” WebMD says. “Though rare, severe thrombocytopenia can cause bleeding into the brain, which can be fatal.”
The university has agreed to pay $1.4 million to his estate and to his wife. OSU also agreed to fund a structured annuity for his three children. The university will pay $300,000 into the annuity over the next four years.
In an unrelated case, the university also agreed to pay $1.75 million to a Marietta man who was badly injured during spinal surgery. He alleged in his suit that air traveled through a catheter into his circulatory system, causing an air embolism.
As a result of the embolism, he suffered multiple heart attacks, as well as brain and spine strokes. He was left with permanent disabilities, he said in his lawsuit.
