Three lives forever changed by medical malpractice

She used to run marathons and she used to be a fitness instructor and a teacher. Like virtually every adult, she used to walk and talk and feed herself and dress herself. But those days are gone.

Today, she sits paralyzed in a wheelchair, relying on a pair of caregivers to help her through each day. She can move her right arm, but that’s about it. Speech is something she is struggling to regain.

Her story is one that combines medical negligence with a measure of justice and even greater measures of love for her family.

Regular readers of our medical malpractice blog know that we share stories from around the nation. The woman we mentioned lives in Massachusetts with her 7-year-old daughter and her husband.

It was after giving birth that she suffered a massive stroke that left her in a months-long coma.

Back in 2004, three years before her daughter was born, the woman was diagnosed with a brain abnormality that should have landed her name on a special list.

The women on that list who became pregnant were to deliver by Caesarian section, not by labor. The risk of labor was that it could trigger stroke — exactly what happened to the Massachusetts woman whose name was never put on the special list.

“She requires 24-hour care for pretty much everything,” her medical malpractice attorney said. He recently helped his client to receive the lifelong, 24/7 care she needs after a malpractice trial in which compensation of $35.4 million was awarded to her.

The woman’s husband thanked their legal team for their diligence and skill, but sad he is saddened to see his wife struggle to communicate with their energetic daughter.

“It’s devastating to see” her struggle to speak; to fulfill the role of mother she used to talk so fondly of; to be unable to be the fit and strong person she used to be, he said.

It makes little sense for a person so devastated by doctor negligence to have piled on top of their injuries tremendous financial burdens that come with extreme physical damage. That’s why people in similar situations turn to an attorney experienced in the complexities of medical malpractice to help them get the compensation they need and deserve.

If you or someone you loved has been injured or killed due to the negligence of a medical professional, you have the right to obtain compensation through a Kentucky or Ohio medical malpractice claim.
