The effects of medical malpractice can be disastrous

The state of Kentucky has strict health regulations and safety codes to ensure the protection of all those who seek medical treatment. The majority of doctors and nurses across the state are well-trained, highly skilled professionals who perform their duties with precision and care. However, what can be done when a patient is harmed due to a mistake or lack of care? This is considered medical malpractice, and families have the option to take legal action.

A family in another state was recently awarded over $5 million from a lawsuit that a widow filed after the death of her husband. Reportedly, the man was a veteran and sought treatment for psychiatric problems. That lawsuit said that, after speaking with providers, the man was transported to the emergency room with a high risk for suicide.

According to the claim, the man was diagnosed with general anxiety disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder. After his diagnosis, the lawsuit said the man was seen by a psychiatrist, who concluded that the man was not at risk for suicide and discharged him. Allegedly, the man committed suicide only two days later. A federal judge awarded the plaintiffs more than $5 million in damages.

When treating any type of ailment, mental or physical, a deviation from the accepted standard of care can have disastrous consequences for patients and families. Medical malpractice affects thousands of families across the country each year. Kentucky families who have suffered as a result of medical malpractice could benefit by seeking the services of a knowledgeable and experienced attorney.
