Medical malpractice: Even minor surgeries come with risks

Medical technology in the United States has improved by leaps and bounds in just the last 20 years. What were once invasive and difficult surgeries have now become simple and routine. Surgeons in Kentucky and across the country combine their expertise with advanced technology to improve outcomes and save the lives of their patients. When humans are involved, however, the risk for medical malpractice will always be present.

A recent lawsuit in another state claimed that a surgeon's negligence led to a woman suffering extreme injuries in what should have been a fairly routine surgery. The lawsuit said the woman went for a laparoscopic surgery to remove her gallbladder. During the procedure, the surgeon allegedly cut the wrong bile duct and mistakenly cut an artery that delivered blood to the woman's liver.

The lawsuit alleged that the surgeon did not follow the proper procedures during the surgery and misidentified the woman's organs. Due to the surgeon's alleged mistakes, the woman had to have significant reconstructive surgery and endured a painful recovery that lasted almost a full year, according to claims. Reportedly, a jury sided with the plaintiff and awarded her $1.25 million in damages.

Thousands of people across the country undergo surgical procedures every day. The vast majority of these surgeries are successful and improve the patients' lives. However, there will always be risk associated with any surgery, and an error during a procedure can have catastrophic effects for patients and families. Those in Kentucky who have been affected by medical malpractice could possibly be awarded much-needed compensation by consulting an attorney and filing a claim.
