Alleged medical malpractice causes woman to lose vision

Although Kentucky residents have access to some of the best medical care in the country, mistakes will happen. Any mistake during a medical procedure can have devastating effects for the patient. A woman in another state claims that her vision loss was the result of medical malpractice during surgery, so she filed a lawsuit. According to claims, negligence by a nurse caused permanent injury to the woman's eye.

The lawsuit says the woman underwent a procedure on her right eye to extract a cataract while removing tissue behind the lens of her eye as well. The lawsuit asserts that, after the surgery, a proper dressing needed to be applied to promote healing. It is alleged that the doctor who performed the surgery applied gauze while the assisting nurse was responsible for applying adhesive tape.

Allegedly, the nurse did not have a piece of tape ready but instead pulled a piece of tape from a roll, stuck it to the plaintiff's face and rolled it across the gauze pad with her thumb pressed into the plaintiff's eye to hold the gauze in place. The lawsuit claims that the surgeon yelled at the nurse to stop and slapped her hands away from the plaintiff's face. The plaintiff claims that the negligence of the nurse caused retinal detachment and hemorrhaging, which has left her with permanent vision loss in her right eye. Reportedly, the plaintiff seeks $2.25 million in damages.

Any medical procedure, no matter how routine, should be handled with precision and care. Any deviation from the standard of care can result in injuries that can affect the patient for the rest of his or her life. Those in Kentucky who have been affected by medical malpractice may be able to pursue legal action. By filing a lawsuit, victims and families could be awarded much-needed compensation for their pain and suffering.
