Woman awarded $109 million in medical malpractice suit

Although modern technology and regulations have made surgery in the state of Kentucky safer than ever before, errors can be made anytime humans are involved. A woman in another state lost her hands and feet due to complications stemming from a surgery to remove a cyst. She alleged that medical malpractice was to blame and filed a lawsuit. The lawsuit recently resulted in a substantial award to the plaintiff for her pain and suffering.

The lawsuit said that the woman underwent a surgical procedure to remove a cyst located on her ovary. During the procedure, the surgeon allegedly came very close to severing the woman's small intestine. The woman claimed that this left her with regular pain in her abdomen, and her lower bowel was eventually destroyed by flesh-eating bacteria.

According to the lawsuit, the woman suffered from gangrene in her hands and feet as a result of the infection. The woman had to have four amputations below her elbows and knees, which resulted in the loss of both of her hands and feet. The woman claimed that her quality of life drastically suffered as the simplest tasks became difficult for her and she became confined to a wheel chair. The jury sided with the plaintiff and awarded her a total of $109 million in damages.

Kentucky residents have access to top-notch medical care and assistance. However, any mistake or negligence during a medical procedure could have permanent ramifications for the patient. Families in Kentucky that been subjected to medical malpractice could benefit by seeking the services of a knowledgeable attorney. Compensation awarded from a successful lawsuit could help victims cope with the suffering associated with this experience.
