How to drive safely in heavy fall rain

| Oct 11, 2017 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

As one of our Kentucky readers, you know that the fall season is one of the best times of the year. There is nothing more exciting than watching the leaves change as you soak in the local scenery.

Of course, the fall season has the potential to bring inclement weather to the state. For instance, it’s not out of the question for heavy rain to fall every now and again.

If you find yourself behind the wheel of your car during a rainstorm, there are several steps you need to take to improve your safety. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Be patient. Even if you are in a hurry to reach your destination, maybe because you are running late for work, you must take your time. If you begin to rush there’s a good chance you could find yourself making mistakes that put you at risk.
  • Use your headlights. There are two reasons to do this: It makes it easier for you to see the road ahead, and it makes your vehicle more visible to others. You should always use your headlights when the rain begins to fall, regardless of the time of the day.
  • Leave more space to stop. The more space you leave between your vehicle and others the easier it is to stop quickly without causing an accident.

Even though there are other things you can do to improve your safety when driving in heavy rain, these tips are among the best.

Unfortunately, there’s one last thing you need to know: No matter how safe you are, other drivers don’t always take the same level of caution.

If another driver causes an accident, move your car to safety and call 911. Once you receive treatment, you can then learn more about the cause of the accident and your legal rights for receiving compensation.
